2023

January 2023
The GreenHeatEAF project started in January 2023. The Consortium partners had a pre-kick off meeting online on 20 January 2023.

March 2023
The Kick-off meeting took place on 2 & 3 March 2023 in Brussels.

The GreenHeatEAFproject was presented at the ESTEP Spring Dissemination Event 2023, which took place in-person on 29 & 30 March 2023 at the Aula Magna of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) in Pisa, Italy.

Swerim informed about the project on the 152nd TMS 2023 annual meeting & exhibition in San Diego (USA).

May 2023
BFI informed about the GreenHeatEAF projct during the dissHEAT webinar on «Heating and burner technology», organised by SWERIM.

June 2023
The Consortium had its second General Assembly meeting online on 22 June 2023.

September 2023
On 29 September 2023, the GreenHeatEAF was presented online at the SWERIM recycling day 2023 with a presentation on "the role of digital technologies in increasing recycling and enhancing valorization of by products".

October 2023
The GreenHeatEAF project was represented by the project coordinator Valentina Colla (SSSA) to with a contribution on " Flowsheet model for the
prediction of the effects of the use of renewable non-fossil carbon sources in electric arc furnace" at the ESTEP Annual event 2023 - A Circular Economy driven by European steel in Barcelona.

November 2023
SWERIM informed about the GreenHeatEAF project at the 10th Scientific Seminar Prometia, whoch took place on 28-30 Nvoember 2023 in Lisbon

December 2023
On 1 December 2023, SSSA and Sidenor contributed with a presentation on "Exploring the use of alternative non-fossil carbon and energy
sources, and novel iron carriers in electric steelworks through a dedicated flowsheet model" to the EAF International Meeting in Bergamo (Italy).

2024

May 2024
GreenHeatEAF went to Sweden for the 18th Society and Materials Conference (SAM18).
Colleagues from Sidenor and SSSA gave a presentation on "Reducing the dependence from non-fossil carbon materials and the related impacts: effect of the use of alternative C-bearing materials on material and energy flows of electric steelworks" on 14 May 2024.

June 2024
Colleagues from SSSA took part at the 13th European Electric Steelmaking Conference 2024 in Essen (Germany). On 4 June, Bernd Kleimt (BFI) presented " Complementary modelling approaches to assess and optimise the EAF process behaviour for C-lean operation". On 5 June 2024, Valentina Colla (SSSA) gave a presentation on the " Use of alternative non-fossil carbon sources in electric steelworks: Results of flowsheet model-based simulations".

September 2024
On 25 & 26 September the consortium came together again for the General Assembly in Halmstad (Sweden). The consortium partners also had the chance to have a great visit of Höganäs AB facilities.

October 2024
GreenHeatEAF took part at the 9th European Coke and Ironmaking Congress (ECIC), which was held  on 16-18 October 2024 in Bardolino (Italy).

The GreenHeatEAF project was also presented on 31 October at the ESTEP Annual Event 2024 at voestalpine in Linz.

The project took part of the clustering special session on "Hydrogen in heating technologies" next to sisters' project as HyInHeat, HyDreams, H2AL, H2GLASS, HyTecHeat, TWINGHY and H2Reuse.
The special session aimed at jointly presenting EU projects addressing hydrogen in heating technologies (steel downstream and other sectors) with a clear focus on demonstrators and NOx emissions, digital tools and KPIs topics. Oliver Hatzfeld (BFI)  & Marianne Magnelöv (SWERIM) represented GreenHeatEAF with a contribution focused on "Demonstration and Digital tools to investigate hydrogen exploitation in EAF burner". On the same day, Ismael Matino (SSSA) gave a presentation on "Scenario analyses to evaluate the effects of hydrogen exploitation in EAF burners".

November 2024
Trials in the EAF at SWERIM within the GreenHeatEAF project were conducted in November 2024:
– Hydrogen production in electrolyser for use in co-jet burner to replace natural gas
– Bio-carbon as injection coal instead of fossil carbon to investigate slag reduction and foaming
– Slag modification in slag pot to adjust the slag chemistry and obtain a slag suitable for the cement industry.

This was investigated with different iron carriers; scrap charging, DRI-feeding, HBI-feeding and scrap-feeding.

On 29 November 2024, Valentina Colla presented parts of the work developed by SSSA and Sidenor within the GreenHeatEAF project during the 3rd Session - Recent project activities on national and European level following SCC usage of the SecCarb4Steel workshop on Preparation and use of biogenic and non-biogenic secondary carbon carriers (SCC) in processes for iron and steelmaking, organised by ESTEP.

December 2024
A new article  describing parts of the work developed by SSSA and Sidenor Aceros Especiales within the GreenHeatEAF project on the use of renewable non-fossil carbon sources in electric steelworks has been published in open access in a special issue of Matériaux & Techniques.

2025

May 2025

GreenheatEAF went to the Iron & Steel Technology Conference and Exposition in Nashville (USA) in May 2025! Coordinator Valentina Colla (SSSA) presented the outcomes of the simulation of hydrogen use in the EAF to support decarbonisation, on 6 May 2025 at AISTech2025
